Let’s be honest. Your pet is basically family. They’ve seen you in your sweats, cheered you on through breakups and binge-watched every show with you. So when it comes time to walk down the aisle, why wouldn’t you want your furry, feathered or four-legged sidekick by your side?
Whether you have a chill cat, an energetic pup, a bunny who loves the spotlight or a parrot with a flair for drama, there’s a way to include them in your big day that feels personal and fun.
Here are some adorable, creative and surprisingly doable ways to include your pet in the ceremony — no matter what species they are.
Let Them Join the Processional
Pets in the wedding procession? Instant heart-melter. A dog trotting down the aisle in a bowtie. A bunny carried by the flower girl in a flower-lined basket. A confident cat riding in a decorated wagon (well, maybe — cats have opinions). Even a parrot perched on a trusted friend’s arm can add a burst of personality to your ceremony.
Just make sure someone is responsible for guiding or carrying them and that your pet is comfortable with noise and crowds. This is not the time to test their bravery.
Give Them a VIP Seat
If your pet is more of an observer than a performer, that’s totally fine. Reserve them a front-row seat. Decorate it with their name or a cute sign like “I loved them first.” Let them hang out with a handler and enjoy the show. If you’ve got a tank-dwelling fish or a shy lizard, consider placing their setup somewhere visible but quiet so they can still be part of the moment.
Dress Them for the Occasion
Whether it’s a tuxedo harness, a custom floral collar or a miniature veil, dressing up your pet can be a super cute touch. Of course, comfort comes first. If your cat hates outfits, skip it. If your bird only tolerates a fancy perch, work with that. The goal is joy, not drama.
Mention Them in Your Vows or Ceremony Script
Maybe your pet can’t attend due to travel or venue rules. Maybe your iguana just isn’t into crowds. You can still include them in a meaningful way by working them into your vows or having your officiant mention them. A line like “We promise to keep the fridge stocked with cat treats and to always share the sunny spot on the couch” can be both funny and sweet.
Add Their Face to the Details
Use your pet’s photo on your invitations. Name your signature cocktail after them. Include them in your wedding signage with a custom illustration. You could even feature them on your cake topper or have mini pet-shaped cookies on the dessert table. These small touches bring your pet’s personality into the day without adding any logistical stress.
Plan a Pre-Ceremony Photo Session
Even if your pet won’t attend the ceremony, you can still include them in the photo fun. Schedule a quiet moment before guests arrive to take portraits with them. Get shots of you getting ready with your cat curled up nearby or your bird hanging out on your shoulder. These moments are often just as meaningful as the ones during the ceremony.
Designate a Pet Handler
Wedding days are busy. The last thing you need is to be worrying about litter boxes, leashes or whether someone remembered the bunny snacks. Ask a friend or hire a pet handler to care for your pet throughout the day. That way, you can relax knowing your best buddy is happy and safe.
Create a Pet Chill Zone
If your pet is attending, give them a break space. A shaded spot with water and treats. A quiet corner with their carrier or crate. Weddings can be loud and overwhelming, and your pet might need a little downtime between photo ops and being adorable.
Celebrate Their Role, Whatever That May Be
At the end of the day, your pet doesn’t need to walk down the aisle in a tiny tux to be part of your love story. Whether they’re present in person or just honored in spirit, they’ve already made your life better — and your wedding should reflect that.
So bring on the purrs, squawks, squeaks and tail wags. Your wedding day is about love, and no one loves you quite like your pet does.
